What is Loxalate?
Loxalate is in a group of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It increases the amount of serotonin in the brain to help maintain mental balance. It is a medication used to treat major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Some people may also use the medication to treat and control other neural conditions such as panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and social anxiety disorder.
How is Loxalate used?
Loxalate is an orally consumed medication taken once per day and can be taken with or without food. The dosage will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s reaction to the medication, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. To help prevent missing a dose, it is recommended to take it at the same time each day. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the medication may cause some conditions to worsen or suffer withdrawal symptoms.
Adverse effects
Loxalate may cause side effects in patients such as:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Insomnia
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Decreased sex drive or performance
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or suffer more severe side effects such as:
- High Fever
- Irregular heartbeats
- Tremors
- Loss of coordination
- Seizures
- Excess sweating
- Severe muscle stiffness
Warnings
The medication should not be taken with any monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressants as it may cause a chemical reaction.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Loxalate is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
