What is Luprac?
Luprac containing the active ingredient trasemide or torsemide is considered a loop diuretic (water pill) type of medication. The medication works by removing excess fluid and salt through urine while minimizing potassium loss. By treating edema in patients with a history of kidney disease, liver disease or heart failure, it can decrease the risk of symptoms such as shortness of breath and swelling of the arms, legs and abdomen. Some people may also take the drug is smaller doses to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).
How is Luprac used?
Luprac is an orally administered medication to be taken once per day unless otherwise directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken in the daytime to prevent having to wake up in the middle of the night to urinate. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with lots of water throughout the treatment to prevent dehydration. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Luprac may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Headaches
- Vomiting
- Muscle cramps
- Fainting
- Nausea
- Dry mouth
- Dehydration
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Luprac is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
