What is MUSE?
Muse works by relaxing the muscles and blood vessels to help blood flow to the penis and prevents the blood from leaving. The active ingredient alprostadil belongs to a class of medications called prostaglandin vasodilators. Improving blood flow and retaining blood in the penis can assist in achieving a harder erection to treat impotence (erectile dysfunction).
How is MUSE used?
Muse should be used 5 to 15 minutes before sexual activity and will last for approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The medication should only be inserted into the urethra using the special applicator as directed by a doctor. The maximum recommended dosage is 2 doses every 24 hours.
Adverse effects
Muse may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Erection lasting more than 4 hours
- Burning sensation in the urethra
- Irregular heartbeat
- Back pain
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Headaches
- Penis, testicle or groin pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Using an alprostadil transurethral pellet improperly could cause damage to the urethra.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
MUSE is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
