What is Malarone?
Malarone is a combination of two active ingredients, proguanil hydrochloride and atovaquone, is considered an antimalarial medication. The medication along with protective clothing and insect repellents are used to prevent and treat malaria. It interferes with the growth and even kills malaria parasites living inside red blood cells and other tissues that have entered the body through mosquito bites.
How is Malarone used?
Malarone should be taken orally once daily with a meal or glass of milk. Your dosage will depend on whether the medication is used to prevent or treat malaria, the patient’s weight and response to the treatment, contact a doctor for the exact dosage. To prevent malaria, start taking the medication 1 to 2 days prior to entering a common malarial area. The medication should be continued during the duration of the stay and for at least 7 days after leaving the area. For treatment of malaria it is recommended to take the medication for at least 3 days in a row.
Adverse effects
Patients using Malarone may encounter side effects such as:
- Upset stomach or pain
- Diarrhea
- Itching
- Nausea
- Headache
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- High fever
- Problem with balance
- Severe skin rash
- Dark urine or stool
- Anemia
- Unusual bleeding
- Jaundice
Warnings
Should you vomit within 1 hour of consuming the medication, it is recommended to dose again. Should vomiting persist, contact a doctor immediately.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Malarone is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
