What is Malirid?
Malirid containing the active ingredient primaquine is considered an antimalarial type of medication. The medication is used to prevent and treat malaria caused by mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common. It works by killing the malaria parasites living inside red blood cells and other body tissues. Some people may also use the medication to treat pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) in AIDS patients.
How is Malirid used?
Malirid is usually taken orally once per day for 2 weeks after leaving the malarious area. To prevent an upset stomach, take the tablets with some food along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. No drug treatment is completely effective in preventing malaria, seek immediate medication attention if you develop symptoms of malaria.
Adverse effects
Patients using Malirid may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

- Stomach cramps
- Blurred vision
- Headaches
- Jaundice
- Dizziness

Warnings
The medication should not be taken for more than 14 days for malaria treatment.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Malirid is not always suitable for all patients.
