What is MESACOL 800?
Mesacol works by reducing the production of certain natural substance that causes inflammation in the colon. The active ingredient mesalamine is considered an anti-inflammatory aminosalicylates type of medication. It is used to treat and prevent various symptoms of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis such as rectal bleeding, diarrhea or stomach pain. Some people may also use the medication to treat a condition that causes inflammation of any part of the gastro-intestinal system called Crohn’s disease.
How is MESACOL 800 used?
Mesacol should only be taken orally as directed by a doctor, usually 3 to 4 times daily. The tablets should be taken with some food and a full glass of water or a glass of milk to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Always swallow the tablets whole and not chew, crush or break them to prevent too much of the medication from being released at once.
Adverse effects
Mesacol may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Indigestion
- Stomach pain
- Excessive gas
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Diarrhea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Fever
- Bloody or coffee ground like vomit
- Change in the amount of urine
- Bloody urine
- Chest pain
- Muscle or joint pain
- Hair loss
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
MESACOL 800 is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
