What is Metaflam?
Meloxicam is a treatment for dogs who have pain and inflammation as a result of acute or chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Metaflam is a selective cox-2 inhibitor and a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
How is Metaflam?
An initial dosage of 0.5mg per kg of body weight is given on the first day. This is followed up with a a maintenance dose of 0.1mg per kg of body weight daily until a clinical response is achieved. (usually within three to four days). If there are no clinical improvements within 10 days, treatment should be stopped.
Metaflam is offered as a chewable tablet. It can be administered directly into the dogs mouth or put into its food.
Adverse effects
Treatment with any NSAIDs can cause unwanted side effects. Loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, fecal blood, lethargy and renal failure have been reported with use on NSAIDS. Less common side effects sometimes reported are hemorrhagic diarrhoea, hematemesis, gastrointestinal ulceration and elevated liver enzymes.
Most of side effects will show within the first week of treatment and are temporary. If they continue or your dog is unwell, contact your veterinarian.
Warnings
Not all dogs will be able to take Metaflam. If your dog is any of the below, speak to your veterinarian about another treatment option:
- pregnant or lactating
- suffering from gastrointestinal issues
- younger than six weeks old or weigh less than 4kg
- allergic to meloxicam
- taking NSAIDs, steroidal treatments, aminoglycoside antibiotics or anticoagulants
- dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive
