What is Metchek?
Metformin a diabetes medicine. It is prescribed as treatment for type II diabetes in cases where diet, exercise and weight loss have not worked, or in cases where insulin therapy is not appropriate. It helps control hyperglycaemia.
Metformin can also be used in the treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes (type I diabetes) in overweight patients.
How is Metchek used?
For control of hyperglycaemia in thyp II diabetics, a dosage of 500mg once or twice a day is usually sufficient. In cases where this dosage does not provide a significant clinical response, the dosage may be increased to a maximum of 100mg three times a day.
Once the hyperglycaemia is being controlled, the dosage can be reduced to the lowest possible dosage at which it can be held.
Adverse effects
The most common side effects of Metformin are:
- diarrhoea
- nausea
- vomiting
- loss of appetite
- metallic taste
These usually occur early in treatment and do not last long. Contact your doctor if the persist.
Some more serious side effects can occur, especially if Metformin is taken at higher dosages or for an extended period of time. These include
- lactic acidosis
- decreased vitamin B12 absorption
- mild erythema, pruritus and urticaria
- liver function test abnormalities
- hepatitis.
Warnings
Lactic Acidosis, a potentially fatal condition, has been associated with Metformin. It is an increased risk factor when higher dosages are being taken, in elderly patients, and in patients where renal function is impaired.
Use Metchek with caution in cases of:
- renal impairment
- hepatic impairment
- elderly patients
- patients with heart failure
It is recommended that pregnant and breast-feeding women do not use metformin unless specifically advised by a doctor.
