What is Metformin?
Metformin belongs to a group of medication called biguanides. It works by decreasing the amount of glucose absorbed from food and produced by the liver. It is used in combination with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Regulating blood sugar levels can help prevent kidney damage, vision problems, nerve problems, loss of limbs and sexual function problems.
How is Metformin used?
Metformin is usually taken orally 1 to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken with plenty of fluids along with a meal to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their reaction to the therapy. The doctor may occasionally adjust your dosage for best results.
