What is Methimez?
Methimez works by preventing the thyroid gland from producing excess thyroid hormone. The active ingredient methimazole belongs to a type of medications called anti-thyroids. The medication is used to treat an overactive thyroid (Hyperthyroidism) and before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatments.
How is Methimez used?
Methimez should only be taken as directed by a doctor, usually once every 8 hours. The medication can be taken with or without food along with a glass of water but should be taken the same way every time. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the medication may cause the symptoms to return.
Adverse effects
Methimez may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Blood disorders
- Flu like symptoms
- Hair loss
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Upset stomach
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Methimez is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
