What is Microgest?
Microgest containing the active ingredient micronized progesterone is a naturally occurring female sex hormone called progestins. It is used as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in women who are not pregnant and not going through menopause to restore normal menstrual periods that have stopped for several months (amenorrhea). Women who have passed menopause but have not had a hysterectomy may also use the medication as part of combination hormone replacement therapy with estrogens to reduce menopause symptoms and decrease the risk of cancer of the uterus.
How is Microgest used?
Microgest is usually taken once per day in the evening or at bedtime unless otherwise directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and treatment cycle as it will depend on the patient's condition and their menstrual cycle. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not split, chewed or broken before consumption.
Adverse effects
Patients using Microgest may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Bloating
- Headaches
- Breast tenderness
- Change in menstrual bleeding
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Acne
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Change in vaginal discharge
- Mental or mood changes
- Vision problems
- Breast lumps
- Jaundice
- Decreased sex drive
- Rapid or unusual weight changes
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Microgest is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
