What is Microgest?
Microgest containing the active ingredient micronized progesterone is a naturally occurring female sex hormone called progestins. The medication can be used by women who have passed menopause but have not had a hysterectomy as part of a combination hormone replacement therapy along with estrogens to decrease the risk of cancer of the uterus and reduce menopause symptoms. Some women who are not pregnant and not going through menopause may also use it as part of a hormone replacement therapy to restore normal menstrual periods that have stopped for several months (amenorrhea).
How is Microgest used?
Microgest should be taken orally once per day in the evening or at bedtime unless otherwise directed by a doctor. The medication should be taken with a glass of water but can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage, start date and treatment cycle as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the therapy. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not broken, chewed or split prior to consumption.
Adverse effects
Microgest may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Acne
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Change in menstrual bleeding
- Breast tenderness
- Headaches
- Bloating
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Rapid or unusual weight changes
- Decreased sex drive
- Jaundice
- Breast lumps
- Vision problems
- Mental or mood changes
- Change in vaginal discharge
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Microgest is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
