What is Minirin Nasal Spray?
Minirin Nasal Spray containing the active ingredient desmopressin is considered a vasopressin analogue or antidiuretic hormone. It is used to manage certain types of diabetes “water diabetes”, a condition which the body produces an abnormally large amount of urine. The medication can also be used to control excessive thirst and abnormally large amount of urine that may occur after certain types of surgery or head injury. Some patients may also use the spray to control nighttime bedwetting in children.
How is Minirin Nasal Spray used?
Minirin Nasal Spray should be administered to the nose 1 to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and application method as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the treatment. Split the recommended dosage evenly and apply half the dose in each nostril. Prior to the initial dose of the medication or if the bottle has not been used in over one week, the bottle will need to be properly primed before usage.
Adverse effects
Minirin Nasal Spray may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Nausea
- Upset stomach
- Flushing
- Sore throat
- Nosebleed
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Weight gain
- Confusion
- Muscle weakness
- Hallucinations
- Seizures
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Minirin Nasal Spray is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
