What is Motivyst?
Motivyst (Canagliflozin) is a hypoglycemic oral medication, sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2).
Motivyst (Canagliflozin) is prescribed to manage type 2 diabetes in adult patients along with a diet and physical exercise to improve glycemic control as monotherapy or in combination with other hypoglycemic agent, including insulin.
How is Motivyst used?
The standard prescribed dose of Motivyst (Canagliflozin) can be 100 or 300 mg, which is taken orally once a day.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms: No Motivyst (Canagliflozin) overdose cases have been recorded. Normally, single doses of Motivyst (Canagliflozin) reaching 1,600mg in healthy individuals and 300mg taken twice daily throughout a 12-week period in type 2 diabetes patients were well tolerated.
Overdose treatment: In case of overdose, standard support measures need to be taken, such as removing the inabsorbed substance from the gastro-intestinal tract, prescribe clinical monitoring and maintenance treatment, considering the condition of the patient. Canagliflozin was barely eliminated from the system during a 4-hour dialysis. It is not expected to have Canagliflozin eliminated via peritoneal dialysis.
Adverse effects
Motivyst (Canagliflozin) may cause the following major sides effects:
- hypotension;
- renal impairment;
- hyperkalemia;
- hypoglycaemia, when used with insulin and insulin-increasing agents;
- genital fungal infections;
- hypersensitivity reactions;
- bone fractures;
- elevated low-density lipoproteins levels.
Warnings
Motivyst (Canagliflozin) is contraindicated to patients with hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or other components of the medication, type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney failure, severe liver failure, to female patients during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and to children under 18.
