What is Naprosyn?
Naprosyn with the active ingredient naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to stop the production of certain natural substances that can cause inflammation, pain and fevers. Patients are usually prescribed the medication to treat osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and rheumatoid arthritis. Some people may also use the medication to treat tendinitis, bursitis, acute gout and even menstrual cramps.
How is Naprosyn used?
Naprosyn is usually taken orally 2 to 3 times daily or as prescribed by your doctor. Take the medication with some food along with a full glass of water to prevent an upset stomach. Dosage will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the treatment, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. To prevent too much of the drug from being released at one time, the tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed or broken. Your doctor may order regular checkups to ensure the medication is not causing harmful effects in patients that require the treatment for a lengthy period of time.
Adverse effects
Naprosyn may cause unwanted side effects in patients such as:
- Bloating or gas
- Dizziness
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- Stomach pain
- Ringing in the ears
- Upset stomach
- Insomnia
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Difficult or painful urination
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Seizures
- Unexplained rapid weight gain
- Oedema
- Change in vision
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Naprosyn is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
