What is Neurontin?
Neurontin works by changing the way the body senses pain and decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain to restore mental balance. The active ingredient gabapentin is considered an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic type of medication. The medication is used to help control certain types of seizures in patients who have epilepsy. Some patients may also use the drug to treat a variety of conditions caused by neuropathic pain such as shingles and diabetes.
How is Neurontin used?
Neurontin should only be used as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 3 times per day at evenly spaced intervals. The doctor may start you on a small dose and gradually increase the dosage but do not adjust the dosage without a doctor’s consent. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Neurontin may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Dry mouth
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- Excessive fatigue
- Loss of coordination
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness

- Trouble breathing or swallowing
- Mental or mood problems
- Back or joint pain
- Memory problems
- Changes in behavior
- Blurred vision
- Increased seizures
Warnings
It is not recommended to take the drug within 2 hours of taking antacids as they may interfere with the absorption of this medication. The medication should not be given to children below 6 years of age.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Neurontin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
