What is Nexium?
Nexium works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. The active ingredient esomeprazole magnesium is considered a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) type of medication. It is used to treat esophagus and stomach problems such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). It can also be used to decrease the chance for developing ulcers in patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) or if they have helicobacter pylori.
How is Nexium used?
Nexium should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times per day. The tablets should be taken orally with plenty of water at least 1 hour before a meal. Dosage and length of treatment will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the medication, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, broken or chewed to prevent too much of the drug from being released at one time.
Adverse effects
Nexium may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Excessive gas
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Drowsiness
- Abdominal pain
- Headaches
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Seizures
- Muscle cramps or weakness
- Watery or bloody diarrhea
- Tremors
- Confusion
- Irregular heartbeat
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Nexium is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
