What is Nilstat?
Nilstat containing the active ingredient nystatin is considered an antifungal type of medication. The medication can be used to treat fungal infections of the skin, mouth, genitals and intestinal tract. It works by disrupting cell membranes, causing holes to appear in it to treat and kill fungi. The capsules can be used to treat fungal infections but cannot be used to treat viral infections such as the flu or common cold.
How is Nilstat used?
Nilstat is usually taken orally 2 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The capsules can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Continue to take the medication until the prescribed cycle is complete, even if symptoms have disappeared, as abruptly stopping the medication can cause the infection to return and allow the fungi to become immune with the medication.
Adverse effects
Patients using Nilstat may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Diarrhea

- Mouth irritation
- Dizziness
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
