What is Nimodip?
Nimodip containing the active ingredient nimodipine is considered a calcium channel blocker type of medication. The medication can help reduce the risk of brain damage if the patient has suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage or an aneurysm. The body’s natural reaction to bleeding is to narrow the blood vessels and slow blood flow but when this occurs in the brain, stopping blood flow can lead to a lack of oxygen in the brain. The drug can relax the narrowed blood vessels in the brain to allow blood to flow more easily to the brain and prevent the brain from being deprived of blood and oxygen.
How is Nimodip used?
Nimodip should be taken as soon as possible after the start of bleeding in the brain, usually within 4 days of the brain hemorrhage. The tablets should be taken orally every 4 hours for up to 21 days. The medication should be taken on an empty stomach, either 2 hours after a meal or 1 hour prior to a meal along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication.
