What is Nizoral Shampoo?
Nizoral Shampoo containing the active ingredient ketoconazole is considered an azole antifungal type of medication. It is used to treat infections caused by fungi and yeasts by interfering with their cell membranes and killing them. The shampoo is used to help relieve flaking, scaling and itching associated with dandruff.
How is Nizoral Shampoo used?
Nizoral Shampoo is usually used 2 times weekly for up to 8 weeks or as directed by a doctor. Once the dandruff condition has been cleared, it can be used once every 1 to 2 weeks. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the length of the patient’s hair, the severity of their condition and their response to the therapy. To apply the medication, wet the hair with warm water before administering the shampoo. Massage the lather over the scalp gently with the fingertips and leave in place for 3 to 5 minutes before rinsing with water.
Adverse effects
Patients using Nizoral Shampoo may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Dry or oily hair or scalp
- Inflammation of the skin
- Irritation, itching or burning at application site
- Discoloration of hair
- Eczema
- Hair loss
- Difficulty breathing
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Nizoral Shampoo is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
