What is Norpress?
Norpress is a medication that can help improve mood, anxiety, tension, feelings of well being and is mainly prescribed to treat and control major depressive disorder. The active ingredient nortriptyline hydrochloride is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant that helps maintain mental balance by preventing natural substances called serotonin and noradrenaline from being reabsorbed into nerve cells and prolonging their mood lightening effects. Some people may also use the medication to treat panic disorders, nerve pain, bedwetting and help quit smoking.
How is Norpress used?
Norpress comes in tablet form and should be taken orally between 1 to 4 times daily. To prevent an upset stomach it is recommended to consume the medication with or just after a meal. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's reaction to the medication and the condition being treated. It is also not recommended to discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as suddenly stopping the treatment may cause a relapse in the patient's condition and severe withdrawal symptoms.
Adverse effects
Norpress may cause side effects in patients such as:
- Increased sweating
- Lack of coordination
- Difficulty passing urine
- Blurred vision
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Increased appetite
- Constipation
- Dry mouth
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Jaundice
- Speech difficulty
- Tremors
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Seizures
- Hallucinations
- Irregular heartbeats
Warnings
Patients should not eat grapefruits or grapefruit juice as it may increase the amount of medication in the bloodstream. It is also important not to take the medication with any monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants (MAOI) as it may cause a drug interaction.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Norpress is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
