What is Norvasc?
Norvasc works by relaxing blood vessels in the body to allow for easier blood flow. The active ingredient amlodipine besylate is considered a calcium channel blocker type of medication. It can be used with other medications or alone to treat hypertension. Lowering high blood pressure can help prevent strokes, kidney problems and even heart attacks. Some people may also use the medication to treat certain types of angina and other conditions caused by coronary artery disease.
How is Norvasc used?
Norvasc is usually taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. The drug can be used to treat angina and hypertension but cannot be used to cure the conditions. For maximum effectiveness the doctor may change your dosage periodically.
Adverse effects
Norvasc may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Flushing
- Stomach pain
- Fatigue
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Headaches
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Unusual sweating
- Shortness of breath
- Fainting
- Irregular heartbeat
- Chest pain
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Norvasc is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
