What is Optimmune Eye Ointment?
Optimmune Eye Ointment containing the active ingredient cyclosporine is considered an immunosuppressive agent type of medication. The medication works by reducing damage to the tear glands, stimulate tear production and control pain and discomfort with your pet. It is mainly prescribed in the treatment of chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK) in dogs.
How is Optimmune Eye Ointment used?
Optimmune Eye Ointment should be applied to your pet’s eye 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a veterinarian. Before applying the medication, remove all debris with suitable nonirritating solutions. Hold the tube of ointment about one inch from the affected eye and apply a short ribbon (1/4 inch) along the inner edge of the lower lid, starting at the inside corner of the eye. Rotate the tube when you reach the outer portion of the eye to help detach the ointment. Hold the pet’s eyelid shut gently and massage the eyelid to disperse the ointment. Repeat as necessary for additional doses to either eye. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage as it will depend on your pet’s condition and their response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Optimmune Eye Ointment is usually well tolerated but may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Tearing

- Pain in the eye
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
