What is Orligal Gel?
Orligal (Orlistat) is a weight loss medicine. It prevents the absoprtion of dietary fat into the body allowing it to be passed through the body. Used in conjunction with exercies and diet, Orligal can aid with weight loss or prevent weight gain.
How is Orligal used?
Orligal is available as a pack of 84 x 120mg capsules. At 3 capsules a day this provide enough capsules for 28 days.
Orligal should be taken with a meal containing dietary fat. It is recommended to take one capsules of Orligal with each of your three main meals.
Swallow each Orligal capsule whole with a glass of water.
Orligal works best when used in conjuction with a healthy diet and an exercise program.
Adverse effects
Orlistat can result in some unwanted side effects. Some of these can be severe and require you to stop taking Orligal. Some side effects are less serious and are just a result of the medicine working asa intended.
Tell your doctor immediately if you experience:
- allergic reaction (hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat)
- severe pain in your lower back
- blood in your urine, painful or difficult urination
- kidney problems such as little or no urinating; swelling in your feet or ankles; feeling tired or short of breath
- liver problems such as nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
Other side effects you may notice are:
- oily or fatty stools
- oily spotting in your undergarments
- orange or brown colored oil in your stool
- gas and oily discharge
- loose stools, or an urgent need to go to the bathroom, inability to control bowel movements
- an increased number of bowel movements
- stomach pain, nausea, rectal pain
These are to be expected and mean that Orligal is working as it should. Contact your doctor if you are concerned about these.
Warnings
Do not take Orligal (Orlistat) if you:
- are allergic to orlistat
- suffer from chronic malabsorption syndrome (an inability to absorb food and nutrients properly)
- are pregnant
Before taking Orligal, check with your doctor if it is safe to do so if you:
- have or have had liver disease
- have or have had kidney disease
- have a history of gallstones or kidney stones
- have or have thyroid conditions
- have a history of pancreatitis
- have or have diabetes (type 1 or type 2)
- have any eating disorder (anorexia or bulimia)
Orlistat can have negative interactions with some medicines, particularly cyclosporine and levothyroxine. If you are taking either of these medicines, make sure to take them three or four hours before or after taking Orligal.
