What is Osteofos?
Osteofos works by increasing bone density and preventing bone breakdown which may prevent bone fractures. The active ingredient alendronate sodium belongs to a class of medications called bisphosphonates. The medication can be used to prevent or treat osteoporosis by women who have undergone menopause and by patients taking corticosteroids. Some people may also use the tablets to treat Paget’s disease of bone.
How is Osteofos used?
The 70mg Osteofos tablets should be taken once per week or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken on the same day each week at least 30 minutes prior to consuming the first food of the day along with a full glass of water. The patient should try to remain in an upright position and not lie down or recline until after eating the first food of the day. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not sucked on, crushed, chewed or split before consuming.
Adverse effects
Osteofos may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Bloating
- Excess gas
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Stomach pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- New or unusual pain in thighs or hips
- Vomit that looks like coffee grounds
- Swelling of hands, ankles or feet
- Black, tarry or bloody stools
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Jaw, joint, bone or muscle pain
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Osteofos is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
