What is Pacifen?
Pacifen containing the active ingredient baclofen is considered a skeletal muscle relaxant or antispastic agent type of medication. It is used to decrease and reduce the severity of muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis or spinal cord diseases. The medication works by relaxing muscles to reduce pain and discomfort while also improve muscle movement.
How is Pacifen used?
Pacifen is usually taken orally 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Your health care provider may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it to the optical dosage but you should never adjust the dosage without consulting them.
Adverse effects
Patients using Pacifen may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Insomnia
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Mental or mood changes
- Increased seizures
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Vision problems
- Urinating more often than usual
- Irregular heartbeat
Warnings
Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the medication may cause severe withdrawal symptoms.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Pacifen is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
