What is Pantoprazole Actavis?
Pantoprazole Actavis is used as a treatment for acid refulx (reflux disease), stomach and dudenal ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Pantoprazole Actavis acts as a proton pump inhibitor, reducing the amount of acid in the stomach.
Pantoprazole works by reducing the amount of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. It inhibits the proton pumps in the parietal cells that are responsible for the production of hydrochloric acid.
How is Pantoprazole Actavis used?
The usual dosage of Pantoprazole Actavis depends on the treatment:
- For acid reflex: usually you will need to take one tablet a day, for 4 to 8 weeks. In some cases you may need to take two tablets per day.
- For stomach or duodenal ulcers: usually you will need to take one tablet a day. For stomach ulcers you will need to do so for 4 to 8 weeks. For duodenal ulcers you will need to do so for 2 to 4 weeks.
- For Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: usually you will take two tablets daily. Sometimes you may need to take two tablets twice a day.
Pantoprazole Actavis is a tablet. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water about one hour before eating a meal.
Adverse effects
You may experience some mild and temporary side effects when taking Pantoprazole Actavis. These are common and should only be a concern if they persist. Most commonly, you may suffer fromheadache and gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, stomach pain, excessing gas, vomiting or diarrhea. Contact your doctor if the persist or become a worry to you.
You should contact your doctor if you notice any of the following side effects:
- excessive or unusual tiredness or weakness
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
- Skin problems (itchiness; rash; swelling, blistering or peeling of the skin)
- sweeling in of the face, lips, tongue or throat
- fever or infection
- chest pain
- shortness of breath
- hypertension (high blood pressure)
- swelling of the legs
- excessive bleeding or bruising
- depression, anxiety or other mental disorders
Warnings
Do not take Pantoprazole Actavis if you are allergic to pantoprazole or any other beta blockers. Also do not take it if you are allergice to sodium carbonate, anhydrous, mannitol, sodium starch glycollate (Type A), methacrylic acid, copolymer, calcium stearate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, purified talc, macrogol 400, sodium lauryl sulfate or Kollicoat MAE 30 DP dark yellow (these are the excipients in the tablets).
Do not take Pantoprazole of you have liver problems, including cirrhosis of the liver.
Tell your doctor if you are taking any medicines. This includes prescription and non-prescription drugs, as well as any herbal treatments or supplements. Tell you doctor if you have any allergies. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breast-feeding.
