What is Pantoprazole?
Pantoprazole works by preventing the actions of proton pumps to reduce stomach acid production. The active ingredient pantoprazole sodium sesquihydrate belongs to a type of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPI). The medication is mainly used to treat a condition where the backwards flow of stomach acid causes heartburn and injury to the esophagus called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Treating this condition can help prevent ulcers, heal ulcers and reduce further damage to the esophagus. Some people may use the tablets to treat other conditions caused by excess stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
How is Pantoprazole used?
Pantoprazole should only be taken orally as directed by a doctor, 1 to 2 times per day. It is advised to consume the medication 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to a meal along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Always swallow the tablets whole and not chew, crush or break them as doing so may destroy the drug.
