What is Pantosec?
Pantosec containing the active ingredient pantoprazole is considered a proton pump inhibitor type of medication. The medication works by preventing excess amounts of acid from being produced in the stomach. It can be used to treat a condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes injury to the esophagus called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) as well as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Some patients may also use the drug in the treatment of peptic ulcers.
How is Pantosec used?
Pantosec is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. The medication should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed or split before consuming.
Adverse effects
Patients using Pantosec may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Excess gas
- Dry mouth
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Joint pain
- Muscle spasms
- Seizures
- Trouble breathing or swallowing
- Irregular heartbeat
- Mental or mood changes
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Pantosec is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
