What is Pentasa?
Pentasa containing the active ingredient mesalazine is considered an aminosalicylates type of medication. It works by preventing the body from producing certain natural substances that cause inflammation or pain. The medication can be used to treat a condition where there is inflammation in the large intestines called ulcerative colitis. It can be used to treat symptoms such as ulceration, intestinal bleeding, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Some people may also use the tablets to treat Crohn’s disease, a condition that causes inflammation of any part of the gastrointestinal system.
How is Pentasa used?
Pentasa is usually taken orally 3 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The prolonged release tablets should always be swallowed whole and not broken, chewed or crushed prior to consumption as it can damage the slow release action.
Adverse effects
Patients using Pentasa may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Excessive gas
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Muscle or joint pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Hair loss
- Chest pain
- Vomit that looks like coffee grounds
- Bloody urine
- Sleeping disorders
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Pentasa is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
