What is Pitocin Injection?
Pitocin Injection is a synthetic form of the natural hormone oxytocin that is normally released by the pituitary gland in the brain towards the end of pregnancy. The medication works by stimulating contractions of the uterus and smooth muscle of the womb. It is used to induce or strengthen labor that has already started naturally and stimulate contractions that help push out the placenta and prevent heavy bleeding after childbirth.
How is Pitocin Injection used?
Pitocin Injection should be injected into a large muscle, either in the hip or buttocks unless directed otherwise by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and frequency of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the treatment.
Adverse effects
Patient’s using Pitocin Injection may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Irregular heartbeat
- Headaches
- Irritation at injection site
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Pitocin Injection should be stored in a refrigerator at a temperature between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius to prevent early expiration.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
