What is Postinor 1?
Postinor containing the active ingredient levonorgestrel is an emergency hormonal contraception more commonly known as the “morning after pill”. The medication works by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary, fertilization of the egg by sperm and changing the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent development of a pregnancy. The tablets should only be used as an emergency contraceptive or backup in case regular birth control (condoms, unprotected sex or birth control pills) fails or is used incorrectly.
How is Postinor 1 used?
Postinor should be taken orally as soon as possible after unprotected sexual intercourse and will remain effective if taken within 72 hours. To avoid feeling sick, the tablets should be taken after food along with a drink of water. If you vomit within 2 hours of taking the medication, contact a doctor immediately to discuss whether you will need to take another pill. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed or broken before consumption.
Adverse effects
Patients using Postinor may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Dizziness
- Changes in menstrual bleeding
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- Breast tenderness or pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
The medication should be used as an emergency contraceptive and should not be taken on a regular basis.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Postinor 1 is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
