What is Premarin?
Premarin is used as a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by women that have passed or are going through menopause. It is a man made version of the female sex hormone, oestrogen. The medication can be used to treat symptoms of menopause such as vaginal irritation, burning, dryness and hot flashes. Some women may also use the drug to prevent certain types of cancer and post menopausal osteoporosis.
How is Premarin used?
Premarin should be taken orally exactly as directed by a doctor, usually once per day. The medication should be taken with or just after food along with a glass of water to prevent an upset stomach. It is usually taken on a on a cycle, such as 3 weeks on followed by 1 week off. Contact a doctor for the correct start date, length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the treatment.
Adverse effects
Premarin may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Hair loss
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Breast tenderness or pain
- Bloating
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Upset stomach
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Vision problems
- Dark urine
- Breast lumps
- Mental or mood changes
- Jaundice
- Decreased sex drive
- Vaginal itching or discharge
- Unusual or rapid weight change or appetite
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Premarin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
