What is Previcox?
Previcox contains the active ingredient Firocoxib, coxib class non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID). It is used to reduce pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis or other joint complaints in dogs.
How is Previcox used?
Previcox comes packaged in a pack of 30 tablets, each containing 57mg of Firocoxib.
Follow the prescription instructions given by your vet. Most dogs will need an oral dose of 5.0mg/kg daily (2.27mg/lb daily).
Previcox is a chewable tablet, so can be given directly of hidden in the dog's food.
Adverse effects
Firocoxib (Previcox) like other NSAIDs may cause some side effects. The most common side effects of Firocoxib involve digestive issues such as vomiting and decrease appetite.
Other possible side effects of Firocoxib include:
- Change in bowel movements (diarrhea, or black, tarry or bloody stools)
- Change in behavior (decreased or increased activity level, loss of coordination, seizure, or aggression)
- Jaundice (yellowing of gums, skin or whites of eyes)
- Increase water consumption or urination changes (frequency, color, or smell)
- Skin irritation (redness, scabs, or scratching)
- Unexpected weight loss
Warnings
Before giving your dog Previcox, make sure your vet knows if your dog has:
- has an allergy to aspirin or any other NSAID
- has an ulcer or bleeding in the stomach
- has liver, or kidney disease
- has congestive heart failure
- has fluid retention
- has bleeding disorders
- has heart disease or high blood pressure
- is pregnant or lactating
- taking a steroid medication such as prednisone, methylprednisolone or prednisolone
