What is Previcox?
Previcox is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) for dogs. It contains the active ingredient Firocoxib and is used to treat the symptoms of pain and inflammation caused by with osteoarthritis or other joint complaints.
How is Previcox used?
Previcox 227mg comes in a pack of 30 tablets. Each tablets contains 227mg of Firocoxib.
Your vet will tell you what dosage your dog will require based on the dog's weight and other factors. Most dogs take a dose of 5.0mg/kg daily (2.27mg/lb daily).
The tablet should be taken orally. Previcox is a chewable tablet that can hidden in the dog's food or given directly to the dog.
Adverse effects
Firocoxib (Previcox) can cause some side effects similar to most NSAIDs.
Digestive side effects (vomiting, diarrhea and decreased appetite) are the most common side effects of Firocoxib.
Other possible side effects of Previcox include:
- Change in bowel movements (diarrhea, or black, tarry or bloody stools)
- Change in behavior (decreased or increased activity level, poor coordination, seizure, or aggression)
- Jaundice (yellowing of gums, skin or whites of eyes)
- Increase water consumption or urination changes (frequency, color, or smell)
- Skin irritation (redness, scabs, or scratching)
- Unexpected weight loss
Tell your vet if your dog experiences any of the above side effects while taking Previcox.
Warnings
Some conditions will prevent Previcox from working as expected, or may require your dog to require a different treatment option. Tell your vet if your dog:
- has an allergy to aspirin or any other NSAID
- has an ulcer or bleeding in the stomach
- has liver, or kidney disease
- has congestive heart failure
- has fluid retention
- has bleeding disorders
- has heart disease or high blood pressure
- is pregnant or lactating
- taking a steroid medication such as prednisone, methylprednisolone or prednisolone
