What is Progestogel?
Progestogel containing the active ingredient progesterone is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring female sex hormone. The gel is able to reach the tissues of the breast without being destroyed in the liver and does not exert any systemic effects on the body. The medication is used for pre-menstrual breast pain (mastodynia) if there are no pathological changes in the breast tissue.
How is Progestogel used?
Progestogel is usually applied topically once per day from the 10th day to the 25th day of the cycle or as directed by a doctor. The daily dose is typically 5g of gel, 2.5g on each breast to be applied after a bath. Once the gel is applied to the breast, gently massage it in until the medication is fully absorbed. Always use the dose applicator to correctly measure the dosage as the maximum recommended daily dose is 5g. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and timeframe as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy.
