What is Progynova?
Progynova (Oestradiol) is a synthetic form of the female sex hormone that is produced in the ovaries, estrogen. Young women who do not produce enough estrogen naturally can use it in hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Women who are going through menopause or have passed menopause may use it to treat vaginal dryness, itching and burning, hot flushes and post menstrual osteoporosis.
How is Progynova used?
Progynova should be taken one tablet, once per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage, start date, treatment cycle and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed or split prior to consumption.
Adverse effects
Progynova may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Breakthrough bleeding or spotting
- Breast tenderness or pain
- Hair loss
- Headaches
- Bloating
- Vomiting
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Blood clots
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Jaundice
- Breast lumps
- Unusual vagina bleeding (especially if you are past menopause)
- Mental or mood changes
- Decreased sex drive
- Unexplained or rapid weight changes
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Progynova is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
