What is Progynova?
Progynova containing the active ingredient oestradiol, a female sex hormone produced in the ovaries. Women who have passed menopause or going through menopause may use it to treat post menstrual osteoporosis, hot flushes and vaginal dryness, itching or burning. Young women may also use it if they do not produce enough estrogen naturally. Some doctors may also prescribe the medication to men in the treatment of certain types of prostate cancer.
How is Progynova used?
Progynova should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually one tablet once daily. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct start date, treatment cycle, length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, split or chewed prior to consumption.
Adverse effects
Progynova may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Breast tenderness or pain
- Headaches
- Bloating
- Hair loss
- Vomiting
- Breakthrough bleeding or spotting
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Breast lumps
- Unusual vaginal bleeding (especially if you are past menopause)
- Jaundice
- Mental or mood changes
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Decreased sex drive
- Blood clots
- Unexplained or rapid weight changes
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Progynova is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
