What is Proin 50?
Proin is used to tighten the urethral sphincter muscle in canines to control urine leakage from the bladder. The active ingredient phenylpropanolamine belongs to a class of medications called adrenergic agents. The tablets can be used by dog owners to treat urinary incontinence in obese or older dogs as well as female dogs that were spayed at a very young age.
How is Proin 50 used?
Proin chewable tablets are usually given to the pet twice per day or as directed by a veterinarian. The medication can be hidden in the pet’s food for self consumption or fed directly to the pet. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the dog’s weight, condition and their response to the therapy. The recommended dosage is usually 2mg/kg of the pet’s body weight.
Adverse effects
Proin 50 may cause side effects such as:
- Seizures
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Aggression
- Hypertension
- Loss of appetite
- Hyperactivity
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Proin 50 is not always suitable for all animals. Always consult your veterinarian prior to using this medication if your pet is pregnant, breastfeeding, breeding, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if it has any allergies or other health problems.
