What is Proin 25?
Proin containing the active ingredient phenylpropanolamine is considered an adrenergic agent type of medication. The medication works by tightening the urethral sphincter muscle in canines to control urine leakage from the bladder. It is mainly prescribed to treat urinary incontinence in dogs and works especially well with older or obese dogs as well as female dogs that were spayed at a very young age.
How is Proin 25 used?
The chewable Proin tablets should be given to the pet 2 to 3 times per day unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian. The tablets can be fed to the pet directly or hidden in their food for self consumption. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage as it will depend on the dog’s weight and their response to the treatment. The recommended dosage is usually 1 to 2mg/kg of body weight.
Adverse effects
Dogs given Proin may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Hyperactivity
- Loss of appetite
- Hypertension
- Aggression
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Seizures
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsens.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Proin 25 is not always suitable for all animals. Always consult your veterinarian prior to using this medication if your pet is pregnant, breastfeeding, breeding, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if it has any allergies or other health problems.
