What is Proluton Depot?
Proluton Depot with the active ingredient hydroxyprogesterone is a man made version of the female hormone called progesterone. The medication can be used by women who have had one premature baby to lower the risk of another premature birth. The injection should not be used by women who are carrying more than one baby (such as twins, triplets) and cannot be used to stop premature labor that has already begun.
How is Proluton Depot used?
Proluton Depot should be injected into the hip area, once per week or as directed by a doctor. The injections should be started from week 16 of the pregnancy until week 37 of the pregnancy or when the baby is delivered, whichever comes first. Contact a doctor for the correct starting date and dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the treatment. If you are administering the medication at home, learn all preparations and usage instructions from a health care professional prior to injecting the solution.
Adverse effects
Proluton Depot may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Jaundice
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Mental or mood changes
- Dark urine
- Headaches
- Itching, pain, bruising, swelling or hard lump at application site
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Proluton Depot is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
