What is Protecadin OD?
Protecadin OD works by interfering with histamine in the body to decrease the amount of acid produced in the body. The active ingredient lafutidine belongs to a class of medications called histamine H2 antagonists. Reducing the amount of stomach acid produced can treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and dyspepsia. Some people may also use the medication to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers.
How is Protecadin OD used?
Protecadin OD should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times per day. It is recommended to take the tablets once after breakfast and once after your evening meal or before bedtime. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the treatment.
Adverse effects
Protecadin OD may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Increase in liver enzymes
- Hallucinations
- Constipation
- Sore throat
- Jaundice
- Loss of appetite
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Patients with a history of liver or kidney impairment may experience complications while taking the medication.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Protecadin OD is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
