What is Protecadin OD?
Protecadin OD containing the active ingredient lafutidine is considered a histamine H2 antagonist type of medication. The medication works by interfering with histamine in the body to decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Decreasing the amount of stomach acid can help treat conditions such as dyspepsia and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Some people may also use the medication to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers.
How is Protecadin OD used?
Protecadin OD is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets are usually taken once after breakfast and once after dinner or before sleeping. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Patients using Protecadin OD may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Loss of appetite
- Jaundice
- Sore throat
- Constipation
- Hallucinations
- Increase in liver enzymes
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Patients with a history of liver or kidney impairment may experience complications while taking the medication.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Protecadin OD is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
