    | Manufacturer: | Astellas |  What is Protopic?Protopic Ointment contains the active ingredient Tacrolimus Monohydrate and is used to treat severe cases of atopic dermatitis (eczema). It is a topical immunosupressant that works by decreasing cell activiy in the body's immune system. This slows the growth and spread of the eczema.
 How is Protopic used? Each tube of Protopic contains 30g of ointment. This 0.03% dosage is the lower of two available dosages and can safely be used on adults or children.
 Protopis should be applied as a thin layer directly on the eczema. The ointment and infected area should should remain uncovered. Long-term treatment (longer than six weeks) is not recommended. Only use the ointment until the skin has cleared up, unless otherwise advised by your doctor. If the condition worsens at any stage, or has not imprived within six weeks, stop using Protopic and contact your doctor. Adverse effectsSome miled side effects can be expected when using Protopic Ointment. These may include:
 
  mild burning, stinging, or itchingskin rednessacnecold or flu symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throatheadachefeeling more sensitive to hot or cold temperatures Tell your doctor if any of the above become troublesome to you, or if they do not go away over time. Also be aware of any signs that you are allergic to Protopic Ointment. If you experience any of the below side effects, contact a doctor right away: 
  severe stinging, burning, itching, or soreness where the medicine is appliedswollen glandsredness or crusting around your hair folliclessigns of a skin infection (redness, swelling, itching, oozing) WarningsProtopic can cause uncomfortable drying of the skin. You may need to apply a moisturizer. Ask your doctor which moisturizing creams will be suitable.
 Before using Protopsi, make sure your doctor is aware if you have: 
  skin cancerskin infection (including herpes or chickenpox)any genetic skin disordera weak immune systemkidney diseaseswelling, redness, or irritation of large areas of your skin Protopic Ointment is classified as Pregnancy Catergory C by the DFA. This means is uncertain if it will be harmful to an unborn baby is used during pregnancy. Protopic can be passed though the breast milk. |
