What is Provera?
Provera can be used to bring on a normal menstrual cycle in women who menstruated normally in the past but have not menstruated in the past 6 months and who are not pregnant or undergoing menopause. The active ingredient medroxyprogesterone acetate is a man made form of the female hormone, progestin. It can be used to treat various disorders of the menstrual cycle such as irregular, heavy or painful periods as well as abnormal uterine bleeding. Some women may also use it to treat a condition where tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus is found elsewhere in the body, endometriosis.
How is Provera used?
Provera is usually taken orally once daily or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken with a glass of water but can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct cycle of treatment, length of treatment, start date and dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. The medication should be taken whole and not chewed, crushed, split or broken before consumption.
