What is Questran Lite?
Questran Lite is a medication used alongside healthy diet regimes to lower cholesterol levels in patients suffering from elevated levels of low-density lipoproteins. It operates by binding to bile acids in the intestines to prevent cholesterol from being reabsorbed, which causes it instead to be passed it into the feces. This medication has also shown effectiveness in treating itching caused by excess bile acid.
How is Questran Lite used?
Questran Lite is typically prescribed to be taken either once or twice each day. One sachet is mixed with two to six ounces of water or juice. Stir the contents thoroughly and drink the entire glass. You may also be instructed to rinse any remaining contents with more water or juice, and then also drink this to ensure the entire dosage is consumed. It may be possible to mix the medication with foods such as applesauce or soup. Discuss this with your doctor beforehand to ensure the correct application and to prevent the effects from being altered.
Adverse effects
Although normally well tolerated, Questran Lite may cause some side effects. These include:
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Confusion
- Loss of balance or coordination
- Muscle or joint pain
- Change in taste
- Abnormal bleeding or bruising
Symptoms can range from mild to severe and should be reported to your health care provider as soon as they appear. Some may require medical attention or a change in your treatment after observation.
Warnings
Inform your health care provider if you have diabetes before you begin using Questran Lite, as this may cause complications. Also disclose if you have a thyroid disorder, kidney or liver disease, or chronic constipation.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Questran Lite is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
