What is Rebetol?
Rebetol containing the active ingredient ribavirine belongs to a class of antiviral medications called nucleoside analogues. It should be used in combination with an interferon alfa product to prevent the hepatitis C virus from spreading inside the body. Long term hepatitis C infection can cause liver swelling that lead to serious liver conditions such as scarring, caner and organ failure. The medication can help control hepatitis C but is not a cure for the infection and cannot prevent the spreading of hepatitis C to others.
How is Rebetol used?
Rebetol is usually taken orally twice daily or as directed by a doctor. The capsule can be taken with or without food but every dose will need to be taken the same way. Contact a doctor for correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. The capsule should be swallowed whole and not cut, split or broken to prevent too much of the medication from being released at one time.
