What is Reglan?
Reglan containing the active ingredient metoclopramide is considered an antiemetic and gastroprokinetic type of medication. It works by increasing muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract to speed up the movement of food through the stomach and intestines. The medication can be used to treat conditions such as persistent heartburn and esophagus ulcers caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Some patients diagnosed with diabetes may also use it to relieve symptoms caused by slow stomach emptying such as nausea, vomiting and stomach fullness.
How is Reglan used?
Reglan should be taken orally 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication is usually taken 30 minutes prior to a main meal and once at bedtime along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition, their weight and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the treatment may cause severe withdrawal symptoms.
