What is Renalzin?
Renalzin works by binding phosphorus ingested in the diet to prevent it from being passed through the gastrointestinal tract and instead eliminated with the feces. The active ingredient lanthanum carbonate belongs to a class of medications called calcium-free and aluminum-free phosphate binders. Controlling the phosphorus intake by your cat can help reduce the burden on their kidneys, protect the kidneys and slow the progression of kidney disease. It is mainly used to treat CRD (chronic renal disease), a common health problem for aging cats and can improve your pet’s quality of life.
How is Renalzin used?
Renalzin should be given to your cat as directed by a veterinarian, usually 1 to 2 times per day depending on their feeding pattern. The medication should be added to your cat’s preferred food or prescription renal diets using the easy to use pump applicator. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the cat’s condition and its response to the treatment.
Adverse effects
Renalzin is usually well tolerated with no known side effects.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Renalzin is not always suitable for all animals. Always consult your veterinarian prior to using this medication if your pet is pregnant, breastfeeding, breeding, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if it has any allergies or other health problems.
