What is Renalzin?
Renalzin containing the active ingredient lanthanum carbonate is considered a calcium-free and aluminum-free phosphate binder type of medication. The medication works by binding phosphorus ingested in the diet to prevent it from being passed through the walls of the gastrointestinal tract and instead eliminated with the feces. Controlling phosphorus can help reduce the burden, protect the kidneys and slow the progression of kidney disease. It can be used to treat chronic renal disease (CRD), a common health problem for aging cats and improve their quality of life.
How is Renalzin used?
Renalzin is usually given to the pet 1 to 2 times per day depending on their feeding pattern or as directed by a veterinarian. The medication should be added to the cat’s preferred food or prescription renal diets using the easy to use pump applicator. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage as it will depend on the cat’s condition, weight and their response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Renalzin is usually well tolerated with no known side effects.
